walking in the spiderwebs | glam ghoul’s guide

Like many other glamorous ghouls, my heart was set on getting the black & white spiderweb Little Jun. It was probably at the top of my list for the Halloween collection…so I was broken hearted when I missed the release. Luckily, all was not lost.

I’ve been following the lovely Mae on Instagram for a while, so when I saw that she was selling her own custom-made spiderweb skirts in her Madcap Mae Etsy store, I jumped at the chance to achieve my webby dreams and support another gal in the community.

This is skirt is absolutely adorable. It’s very well-made and has just the right amount of fullness to hold a great shape without a petticoat. This one was custom made for my waist measurement, but she also has some ready made skirts in her shop.

The skirt does have pockets (hurray)! At first, they seemed a bit small, but they’re definitely deeper than they are wide. I can’t comfortably fit my hand inside, but they do fit my big ol’ Galaxy S6…you just kind of have to slip it in. Plus, the pockets have a special secret…

Polka dots! The bottom hem of the skirt is also lined with polka dot fabric. I love little hidden surprises like this. Speaking of surprises, the spiderwebs on this skirt also GLOW IN THE DARK! How cool is that?

I wore this skirt for a work event and got so many compliments! I paired it with a lovely mustard vintage sweater that the sweet Fabiola sent me. The instant I received the sweater,  I knew that it would go beautifully with spiderwebs for the fall. I’ve been waiting to wear this outfit for a long time, and I’m so glad that Mae allowed me to make it happen even though I missed out on the Little Jun.

To keep the look simple, I wore a chunky beaded necklace and silver spider earrings. I felt super cute and a little bit mod all day. I know it will be a struggle to resist wearing this spiderweb skirt to death in the weeks leading up to Halloween, but I also fully intend to keep wearing it year round. It’s black and white, after all – basically a neutral!

Throughout Spooktember and October, I’m sharing everything a vintage gal needs to have the perfect Halloween with costume inspiration, decor, recipes and more! Click here to find all the Glam Ghoul’s Guide posts.

I have to start this review by just saying upfront that I am so impressed with Meteor Jewelry Co. This is by far the most “high-end” feeling Etsy experience I’ve ever had in all my years shopping there, and I have so much respect for what Paula has built here!

First off: the boxes. Like, damn. Presentation does matter when you’re shipping things; I love cute little envelopes and tissue paper that many of Etsy purchases come in, but these branded boxes definitely set up a very sleek, chic, and professional customer experience. It feels serious (and I want to keep them! I don’t know what I’ll do with them…but I’m definitely keeping them).

It was also great to get a little insight from Paula into how jewelry like this is made; I have a basic understanding of how one goes about making a polymer clay piece, for example but was totally clueless about these. Paula designs all of her pieces, and her 3-D renderings are turned into a mold by a local manufacturer, who casts the pieces in pewter. She assembles and enamels everything herself!

These Parrots on Parade earrings immediately catapaulted themselves to the top of the earring food chain. They are absolutely stunning and such a perfect and unique tiki/tropical piece. Each bird is hand-painted in a 3-4 step process, and you can really tell. They’re so much more delicate and detailed than I could even tell from the product photos.

I chose these precious yellow parrots with sweet green bellies, because I thought they were fun and bright, and would go well with a wide variety of tropical-themed outfits!

Also, the earrings are amazingly light. They’re big and substantial, but I wore them all day without any discomfort (and I’m kind of a baby about heavy earrings haha).

Y’all know I love a big ass brooch, and this is a Big. Ass. Brooch. It’s huge, which thrills me to no end! The Tahitian is available in a number of colors, and I was definitely tempted by the purple and teal, but I’m really glad that I went with Mother of Pearl. It’s just so classic and sophisticated. I love that it would work just as well on a sleek black dress as on a flashy tiki-tastic outfit. And I definitely intend to wear it both ways!

The brooch has “Meteor” stamped on the back (and the earrings have little “M”s!)…just another tiny detail that no one else will ever see, but that really steps up the quality of the piece.

I just really can’t express how impressed I was with these pieces! I can’t wait to place another order with Meteor Jewelry Co – I can tell that this will definitely be one of my go-to sources for classic, vintage-inspired jewelry going forward.

let them eat cake (hearts and found review)

let them eat cake (hearts and found review)

Not gonna lie, I might have teared up a little bit from joy when I put this dress on.

I’d been nervous in the past about ordering custom dresses; what if I messed up the measurements? What if I didn’t like it after all? Would it be hard???

Luckily, ordering from Hearts and Found allayed all of my fears and then some!

I’m a huge fan of supporting small businesses (especially women-run businesses!), so it was great to see that Hearts and Found works with local tailors and shops at local markets. It’s easy to use “Made in the USA” as shorthand for an ethical purchase, but that definitely isn’t always true, and I’m happy for my shopping habit to support local talent all over the world. Really, the thing that concerned me most about ordering from Vietnam was the shipping time since, in the immortal words of Veruca Salt:

veruca i want it noww

I was really impressed with the communication from Marjorie while ordering from Hearts and Found. I’ve always kind of thought of custom clothing as something very fancy and special, and Marjorie definitely made me feel like I was special! She even immediately checked in after receiving my measurements to double-check they were correct, since they seemed a little off…fear number one taken care of! She was really communicative, and the dresses (yes…dresses) came along much quicker than I expected. For my own personal timeline, I placed my order on July 5, received confirmation that the package had shipped on July 12, and the package was delivered to me on July 20 (and required a signature, so I had to go pick it up at the post office the next day, but that doesn’t count). I don’t know how standard this is for Hearts and Found, but I know I was quoted a longer wait time and was pleasantly surprised by how quickly the garments were created and made it to me.

But enough blah blah. How about that dress?

As soon as I saw the “Ring a Ring o’ Roses” fabric, I knew I had to have it. I’ve never really been a big fan of pink, but I’ve seriously been vibing on it lately. I’ve been admiring pink things and working pink accessories into my wardrobe, but I still didn’t own any pink clothes. So why not go full in with an ultra femme pink floral dress?

Hearts and Found allows you to pair any of their fabric choices with any dress pattern; after much deliberation, I selected the Grace dress. I loved the flattering ruched bust and of course the big gathered skirt, and I figured the adjustable straps would be a bit forgiving if I’d messed up my measurements somehow. (Can you tell I was really concerned about the measurements?)

In person, the dress is absolutely beautiful. It’s fully lined, which is amazing, and the fit is absolutely spot on. The pockets are real deep, and it’s seriously just so well made. I always worry a bit about handmade items looking a little “Holly Hobby” up against the “pro” stuff, but it looks perfectly at home on my rack of store-bought garments.

I was wishing I had some cake-themed jewelry to wear, since I was definitely feeling the Marie Antoinette vibes in this, but then I realized that, as always, Disney knows the way. “Make it pink! Make it blue!”

The blue and pink bracelet my grandma gave me last time I visited was the perfect pairing! Add in my adorable pink typewriter pin from Ann Shen, a vintage-inspired necklace from a local maker, my trusty pearl earrings, and I was in business!

As for the second dress I bought…well. You’re just going to have to wait until I have the perfect opportunity to wear it! I can tell you that I’m already drooling over the Hearts and Found Etsy shop, trying to figure out what I should order next! I whole-heartedly recommend ordering here, especially if you’re a little nervous about going custom. Marjorie will take good care of you.

tiki temptations

tiki temptations

As you can probably guess from my blog and…well, everything about me, I’m pretty much in love with all things tiki. And since it’s been a while since I did a wishlist/round-up post, I thought I’d share a few of the tiki-tastic treats that have been tempting me lately.

audrey hair flower

First up the piece that inspired this round-up: this Audrey 2 hair flower is one of the greatest things I’ve seen in my entire life! It’s got that perfect mix of pretty and creepy that I can never resist.

blue tiki necklace

It was hard to pick which necklace to include from Summer Blue – there are so many gorgeous, colorful options! But I had to go with this one that includes both my  favorite fruit (pineapples!) and a fun twist on tiki style with the brightly colored tiki heads.

dole whip

I know I’m not the only one head over heels for the delicious Disney Dole Whip! I love the pieces that I won from Le Petit Mouse in Miss Lark Bahar’s giveaway, and this precious Dole Whip brooch/pendant might just have to make its way into my life…

smuggler's cove

You gotta know your tiki history! I’ve heard Smuggler’s Cove  is the resource book for tiki enthusiasts, and it’s definitely on my Amazon wishlist!

tiki room ears

Okay, so I’ve been having a serious problem with Mickey ears lately, which is that I want to buy a million of them even though I have absolutely no reason to! I love how creative and unique these Enchanted Tiki Room-inspired ears are; they ALMOST feel like maybe I could get away with wearing outside of a Disney park…maybe??

tiki menu skirt

This list couldn’t be complete without the absolutely adorable tiki drinks skirt from The Oblong Box Shop. I already own a Sneaky Tiki skirt from here, but this print is so cute. I don’t know how any tiki princess could resist for long (I’m sure I won’t be able to…)

And those are my tiki temptations! Probably not good for my wallet or yours, but oh so lovely to admire.

Have you seen any great tiki pieces lately? Let me know! I’m always looking 😉

don’t let your babies grow up to be (skeleton) cowboys: atomic starlet review

don’t let your babies grow up to be (skeleton) cowboys: atomic starlet review

I had a blast at the Blue Ribbon Beer Run this past weekend, and one of the highlights was definitely having the chance to meet the lovely Jennifer of A Vintage Vanity in person. Jennifer is my very favorite source for hair tutorials on Youtube, and I loved watching her vlogs too. I eagerly awaited the launch of her clothing line, Atomic Starlet, but once it was here, I couldn’t decide what I wanted! When I saw that Atomic Starlet would be vending at the Beer Run, I knew that this was my chance to check out her skirts in person and hopefully bring the perfect one home. And, well…

I’d say I did!

Honestly, no one is more surprised than me that I ended up going with one of her limited edition Nashville Boogie skirts. I’m not usually especially into Western fashion; a fondness for cowboy romance novels is about as Wild West as I get. But the amazing print of skeleton cowboys (SKELETON COWBOYS!!!), the sassy fringe…it just spoke to me and I knew I had to take it home.

Jennifer designs and sews all of her skirts herself, and I was super impressed with the quality of this piece. It’s very substantial and has nice big pockets, which every girl loves. I am wearing a full crinoline under the skirt in these photos, because go big or go home, but I would happily wear it without. It has plenty of fullness all on its own.

I was feeling a bit like a saloon girl at this point in the photoshoot, if you couldn’t tell. And I have to give a shoutout to that FRINGE. If you’re not a person who normally wears fringe, I highly recommend picking up a piece or two. The way it moves is so much fun.

Sizing wise, Jennifer did warn me that this skirt specifically fits a little bit on the larger side due to the fabric. I got the 2X and it is a little bit looser than I would prefer, but I tried on the 1X and it would have been a touch small. I’m happy with my choice, and that’s what belts were invented for!

Because I was going to the office (boo), I paired the skirt with a thrifted “work safe” peasant-style top, but I know it’ll look absolutely amazing with the Pinup Girl Clothing peasant blouses. I also wore a hair flower and spider earrings from my July Belle’s Beauty Box (read my review here!).

I’m so happy with this skirt (and Jennifer was super sweet!), I will definitely purchase another piece from Atomic Starlet going forward. A lot of the pieces there have some deliciously nerdy flair, and Jennifer also offers custom work – all pieces come in sizes XS-4X which is super important to me. Go check her out!

minnie mouse style

minnie mouse style

Minnie Mouse is having quite the style moment right now, but I’ve been a big fan of Ms. Mouse pretty much since birth. One of my very first stuffed animals was a Baby Minnie that my dad picked up on a business trip to Orlando just after I was born, and I’ve loved Minnie ever since! I just had to pick up a pair of Femme de Bloom’s Minnie Mouse cardigan clips, but I hadn’t had the perfect opportunity to wear them…yet…

Is there anything more Minnie Mouse than polka dots? I wish I had a full polka dot dress (add to the list!), but this top did an admirable job of adding some dots to my life.

I usually always wear my tops tucked into my skirts, but I wanted to get as much polka dot action as possible! I had initially planned to wear these clips on a black cardigan, but the red one let them stand out so much more.

And, best of all, after I’d decided to wear the Minnie Mouse clips, I glanced over at my dresser and saw…

The adorable yellow Barbie shoe earrings that I won from fabiicakes in Miss Lark Bahar’s Instagram giveaway! What could be a more perfect addition to a Minnie themed outfit than a pair of vibrant yellow shoes?? I got so many compliments on these shoe earrings throughout the day and from ladies online – they’re so quirky and fun!

And, because I am nothing if not resourceful, I snagged a ribbon that had been wrapped around a box and used it in my hair! I really do need to get a proper variety of hair scarves but until then, I’ll make it work with what I got.

I absolutely love wearing a theme outfit like this…I’ve been thinking about doing a post more about closet cosplay/Disneybound sort of ideas and how to make those, so let me know if that’s something that you would be interested in seeing!

maker spotlight: femme de bloom

When I thought about highlighting the creative makers of the retro/vintage scene, I knew there was one shop I absolutely had to talk about first: Femme De Bloom!

I don’t remember anymore how I happened upon Melanie’s shop…I’m sure I saw some other pinup wearing one of her adorable brooches and promptly headed over to her Instagram and fell down the rabbit hole.

Femme De Bloom is full of beautiful, colorful vintage-inspired handmade jewelry, including lots of pieces with Disney and nerdy inspiration! Everything I’ve gotten from her has been absolutely darling and looks exactly like it did in the listing (unfortunately not always a guarantee!). Her pieces are lightweight but still feel very substantial; I wasn’t nervous at all traveling with these brooches and collar clips in my jewelry bag. Which I definitely did, because I adore them and always want to have the option to pair one of these great pieces with my outfit!

How about a little fashion show?

2015-10-20 08.08.18

Spooky! Did y’all know I used to be a redhead with bleached bangs who didn’t know how to style her hair? It’s true! These cute little Jack o’ Lanterns (currently out of stock) were the perfect fall/Halloween accessory.

Beauty & the Beast is one of my all-time favorite movies, so the “Tale as Old as Time” brooch had to be at the top of my list.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know by now that I am 100% Team Cap! I love being able to show off my team pride with these sweater/collar clips!

These Totoro clips (currently out of stock) might be the cutest thing I’ve ever worn in my entire life. I absolutely coo over them every time I see them.

But my very favorite purchase has to be this Mary Poppins brooch (currently out of stock). There’s something about wearing a brooch that proudly proclaims “Practically perfect in every way” that just makes you feel a little bit more, well, perfect. Much like the lady herself.

Basically, if you haven’t bought anything from Femme De Bloom before and you like Disney, nerdery, and cute things…you’re missing out! There’s absolutely no reason not to place your first order today. In fact, looking up links for this post has got me thinking about picking up some more pretties for myself – so go and pick out what you want before I buy it out from under you!
