a unicorn reborn | ains & elke stylehaus review

I have two great shopping regrets in my life. One is a pair of beautiful teal suede booties that I let a friend (a MALE friend, it goes without saying!!!) talk me out of buying in Chicago when I was in college, and the other is the black and white striped Jenny skirt. I knew that I wanted the skirt from the beginning, but for some reason I kept putting it off and putting it off…until it was too late.

So though I had come to Ains & Elke StyleHaus seeking out Christmas joy, there was no way I could resist this skirt!

Working on my Jack Skellington creepy Christmas realness – how’d I do?

I was most familiar with Ains & Elke StyleHaus from the stunning vintage reproduction sweaters I’d seen all over Instagram. The sweaters are a bit out of my price range (though I hope to save up for one next year!), but I couldn’t miss the Black Friday opportunity to pick up some custom skirts.

Ordering was super easy – all I needed to do was include my waist measurement and preferred length, and we were off! At $65, the custom Trixie skirts are an amazing deal; I also really appreciated that there’s no up charge for plus sizes, which always leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The shop info predicted a 3-4 week turnaround time, and I received my skirts 3 weeks and a handful of days later.

The Trixie skirt has lovely deep pockets and closes with a back zip and two cute buttons. I have no complaints about the construction…everything looks sharp and super high quality! I’ll definitely plan on ordering more pieces from Ains & Elke StyleHaus, and I highly recommend checking the shop out.

I got lots of compliments on this skirt, and I know it’ll be a year-round staple for me. I can’t wait to show off the Christmas skirt I picked up…expect to see that on my Instagram next week!

light my lantern | PUG review

light my lantern | PUG review

I don’t do pencil skirts. I’m a swing kind of lady, the fuller the better. But I’ve been in love with the Halloween Lantern print since the first preview, and I couldn’t justify buying two Jenny dresses from the Halloween line, especially with a print that really is very holiday specific. So I bit my lip, and I took the plunge.

20161010_080559

I feel a little terrible reviewing these Halloween pieces when they’ve all been flying off the shelves (metaphorically speaking) and you can’t actually buy them anymore, but I also can’t not talk about them! Hopefully some of this advice will be helpful for shoppers looking to buy the high-waisted pencil skirt in other prints!

20161010_080500

First off, Stephanie Buscema’s print is GORGEOUS in real life, as I knew it would be. I love her art, but the way Pinup Girl Clothing uses it in their designs isn’t always too my taste. I love this charming all-over print that’s just the right mix of  cute and spooky.

I sized up from my normal 2X according to the size chart, and I’m glad I did. Like the Little Jun skirt, this pencil skirt has elastic panels along the back to help for a perfect fit. I was tempted to stick with my usual size because of that, but it would have been uncomfortably tight through the hips and thighs if I had.

20161010_080433

Since I knew I was waiting for this skirt to drop, I preloaded my cart with a few extras to get me to the free shipping minimum so I wouldn’t have to waste time when the skirt itself came out. I knew these Splendette bangles would be the perfect match and super versatile for fall!

20161010_080226

And, pin addict that I am, I had to have the limited edition enamel pins featuring art from the skirt that Stephanie was selling in her Etsy. I got them a little while ago, but I saved them for this outfit! My pumpkin earrings from Summer Blue Jewelry were the cherry on the sundae.

20161010_080251

I’ve also been experimenting with lipstick lately! I saw a review of the Urban Decay Vice lipstick palette and couldn’t resist. It’s been a lot of fun to try out colors that I wouldn’t have bought a full tube of…let me know if you’re interested in seeing swatches/a full review of that palette.

20161010_080525

I can’t wait to plan more outfits with my new lantern skirt! There’s a lot of spooky looks to fit in before Halloween rolls around!

(As of this writing, the high waisted Halloween Lantern pencil skirt is still available in XS and S.)

spooky sweater | hell bunny review

spooky sweater | hell bunny review

20160928_080847

The first time I saw this sweater, it was kismet. A perfect blend of Halloween and Christmas, ideal for wearing all fall and winter long? I had to have it!

I ordered my sweater from Cats Like Us which no longer has it in stock, but you can find it pretty much anywhere Hell Bunny is sold.

20160928_080913

I ordered the sweater in my usual 2X; it’s wearable, but a bit tight. There isn’t a ton of stretch to the bust where the skull detail is, so definitely size up if you want a looser fit or have a larger bust. It’s also definitely quite short; since I would only ever wear it with something high-waisted, it’s not a dealbreaker.

20160928_080824

The keyhole detail at the neckline is one of my favorite parts – it really gives some extra fun to an otherwise basic shape. The print, of course, is anything but basic. I love the cute little crossed bone ornament details above the skulls. It looks great with all things black and spooky for Halloween, and it’ll be so fun to pair it with red and green for a creepy Christmas look.

20160928_080657

Since I was wearing all black and white, I wanted to go bright with my hair accessories. I felt a little bit self-conscious with this big ol’ Kiki’s Delivery Service bow, but also incredibly adorable. Worth it!

hello halloween harlequin | glam ghoul’s guide

hello halloween harlequin | glam ghoul’s guide

Welcome to Pugoween 2016.

20160921_080420

Here’s a brief history of me and Harlequin prints:

College, just starting to get into pinup: Eh, it’s not really for me.
After getting more involved in pinup and seeing lots of cute outfits: Hmm, idk, maybe.
Upon seeing the Halloween Harlequin: OH GOD GET ON MY BODY RIGHT NOW

So the Halloween Harlequin dress is not only my first harlequin print, but also my first Jenny dress! Shocking, I know. I was always a little intimidated by this perennial favorite; all the talk of boning and de-boning spooked me a bit, I’ll admit it. But this print was too perfect to pass up, so I took a running leap off the dock of indecision and did a cannonball into the glittery black waters of fabulous spookiness.

20160921_080346

There was a lot of sturm und drang about the sizing of this Jenny dress, which didn’t help my nerves. Based on the measurements, I ordered a size up from my usual. I don’t have other Jenny dresses to compare it to, but this was definitely the right choice for me. I’m at the upper end of the 2X, so the 3X has maaaybe just a skosh more room in it than I want, but I definitely wouldn’t have been happy in the 2X. I buy my clothes with the intention of wearing them as part of my everyday life, which means wearing them to work, out and about, sitting, leaping, skipping, etc., so the slight bit of extra ease is perfect for me.

20160921_080316

Also, the pockets in this dress are DEEP AS HELL. Deepest pockets ever, I think…I could lose my whole forearm in there.

20160921_080250

I honestly can’t remember the last time I got so many compliments a dress. She’s definitely a showstopper! I did worry a little bit about how much wear I’ll get from this print outside of Halloween, but even if I don’t wear it much through the rest of the year (which I do intend to do, for the record!), it will be worth it for the fun that I have during the season.20160921_080035

I’m still waiting on the delivery of some Halloween jewelry that I can’t wait to share, so I kept it low key with my Hamlet pin (it has a skull!), a cameo necklace, and some subtle spider earrings.

20160921_080143

I also might have had too much fun practicing my “startled Halloween pinup” facial expressions while taking my detail shots!

20160921_080149

Golly, it’s getting awful spooky!

Who else is madly in love with the Halloween harlequin print? Did you snap up this dress (apparently the most popular one in Pinup Girl Clothing history!)?

I have to start this review by just saying upfront that I am so impressed with Meteor Jewelry Co. This is by far the most “high-end” feeling Etsy experience I’ve ever had in all my years shopping there, and I have so much respect for what Paula has built here!

20160825_173035

First off: the boxes. Like, damn. Presentation does matter when you’re shipping things; I love cute little envelopes and tissue paper that many of Etsy purchases come in, but these branded boxes definitely set up a very sleek, chic, and professional customer experience. It feels serious (and I want to keep them! I don’t know what I’ll do with them…but I’m definitely keeping them).

It was also great to get a little insight from Paula into how jewelry like this is made; I have a basic understanding of how one goes about making a polymer clay piece, for example but was totally clueless about these. Paula designs all of her pieces, and her 3-D renderings are turned into a mold by a local manufacturer, who casts the pieces in pewter. She assembles and enamels everything herself!

20160826_080151

These Parrots on Parade earrings immediately catapaulted themselves to the top of the earring food chain. They are absolutely stunning and such a perfect and unique tiki/tropical piece. Each bird is hand-painted in a 3-4 step process, and you can really tell. They’re so much more delicate and detailed than I could even tell from the product photos.

20160826_131441

I chose these precious yellow parrots with sweet green bellies, because I thought they were fun and bright, and would go well with a wide variety of tropical-themed outfits!

Also, the earrings are amazingly light. They’re big and substantial, but I wore them all day without any discomfort (and I’m kind of a baby about heavy earrings haha).

image-20160825_173825

Y’all know I love a big ass brooch, and this is a Big. Ass. Brooch. It’s huge, which thrills me to no end! The Tahitian is available in a number of colors, and I was definitely tempted by the purple and teal, but I’m really glad that I went with Mother of Pearl. It’s just so classic and sophisticated. I love that it would work just as well on a sleek black dress as on a flashy tiki-tastic outfit. And I definitely intend to wear it both ways!

20160830_075603

The brooch has “Meteor” stamped on the back (and the earrings have little “M”s!)…just another tiny detail that no one else will ever see, but that really steps up the quality of the piece.

I just really can’t express how impressed I was with these pieces! I can’t wait to place another order with Meteor Jewelry Co – I can tell that this will definitely be one of my go-to sources for classic, vintage-inspired jewelry going forward.

roses & ribbons | PUG review

roses & ribbons | PUG review

I don’t know if I’ve stalked and anticipated any Pinup Girl Clothing print as much as this floral ribbon print. Ever since it was first spotted by an eagle eyed PUG fan in the model pic for the mint Sabrina, I’ve been daydreaming about it. In fact, it was this print that inspired me to order this pink floral dress from Hearts & Found…only to have the floral ribbons Ella announced before it had even arrived. Curses! I love the Ella, but it seemed a bit like overkill to have two pink floral full skirted dresses with gathered busts…but I could totally justify picking up a Jenny skirt! You can never have too many of those…

20160818_080758

I was tempted to snatch up the Petite Jenny when it launched, just to make sure I could get a skirt in this print, but I’m glad I waited for the full length version. The print is seriously even more beautiful in person…it’s so soft and feminine, and the colors are so lovely. You can definitely see how many different colors could pair well with it; I would love to wear it with olive.

20160818_080619

It has the same weight and heft of other Jenny skirts. Though I’ve become fond of other skits (like the Doris), there’s a reason that the Jenny has a cult following. These gathered skirts give you an instant “oomph”! I found the fit of this Jenny to be true to size. And the pockets are SO deep! I love it.

20160818_080546

I paired this skirt with a bow-print blouse because ribbons! and bows! I was feeling classically feminine, so I wore my vintage circle pin and a necklace made form vintage enamel pieces. I added a pair of pink rose earrings to my order to get to free shipping…they’re cute, very standard.

I mentioned in my Hearts & Found post that I’m really having a pink renaissance these days…I’m having a lot of fun playing with the color more! There is definitely more pink in my future.

tiki bars: foundation

tiki bars: foundation

IMG_1561

In my short time blogging, I have told you tales of tiki bars far and near, but the time has finally come to share what I consider to be my “home” bar: Foundation!

(If you’re saying to yourself “Hey Penny, the photos in this post are a million times better than your usual photos, what gives?”, first of all, rude, and second of all, yeah, they totally are. I went to Foundation with a coworker who brought her nice fancy camera and was gracious enough to let me use her photos for this post!)

IMG_1565

Located inside an unassuming old house, Foundation is a tropical oasis in not-so-tropical Milwaukee. Though it doesn’t look like much from the outside, inside you’ll find a fabulous traditional tiki bar. It’s dark and intimate, lit with colorful pufferfish lights and bedecked in the finest Polynesian Pop style.

IMG_1571

I will freely admit that I’m totally spoiled by the drinks at Foundation; this bar seriously cares about quality cocktails and crafts each drink specially using fresh ingredients like honey and real pomegranate. This means that drinks can take a while to make it to you, especially on a busy night, but who’s going to complain about hanging out a little longer in a tiki paradise? I would much rather wait for a truly delicious drink. Plus, these drinks pack a serious punch, so you won’t need too many to be having a grand ol’ time…

The staff has always been super friendly. The bartenders work cheerfully but efficiently when it’s busy, but are definitely more than happy to chat if you visit during a lull. I got to see a few photos from a pilgrimage trip to Mai Kai during one visit – these guys definitely take tiki seriously!

IMG_1597IMG_1610

Foundation offers a few cocktails that come with collectible mugs, including a custom Rum Barrel (which I still have to add to my collection…I’m waiting for the right night to tackle it! I took home that Moai in the first image above during this trip…the mermaid mug already lives on my bar cart.).

I feel so incredibly lucky to have such an amazing tiki bar in my own backyard! Honestly, if I could choose to have any of the tiki bars I’ve visited in my own city, I would stick with Foundation every time.
